Breeders Cup Meeting
It is usual for the Breeders Cup to be run at a different race track each year in order to give the US public the opportunity to see the meeting every couple of years as it heads from east coast to west coast from year to year. However, 2008 and 2009 saw the Breeders Cup held at the same course for the first time ever, it was held at Santa Anita in California. In 2010 the Breeders Cup will return to the East Coast at the Churchill Downs Racecourse in Kentucky.
What makes this day so special is that each Breeders Cup Betting race, with the exception of the Breeders Cup Marathon, is worth at least $1 million in Prize money and for the fourteen races it is worth over $25.million. The two day racing extravaganza attracts the best horses from all over the World all in search of the huge prize money and the great prestige of a world championship. The US love to see horses from the UK, Ireland and France taking their chance but we are now seeing entrants from South Africa and all over the World.
Many great US equine stars have emerged over the years including Ravens Pass, Azeri, A.P. Indy, Alysheba, Cigar, Personal Ensign, Ferdinand, Sunday Silence and Curlin. One of the brightest European stars was the great Ouija Board who won her second title in three years in the Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs in 2006. See Breeders Cup History for more information on the background to this great meeting.
